Apple’s new base model 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro has generated debate since its introduction last week, specifically regarding the 8GB of unified memory in the default $1,599 configuration. This replaces the now discontinued 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro which started at $1,299 with 8GB of RAM.
Some argue the 14-inch “Pro” notebook should start with 16GB standard, with 8GB insufficient for intensive creative workloads. The next upgrade to 16GB adds $200 to the price. All-in-all there’s am ongoing heated debate on this Apple decision in Facebook groups, Reddit, and on other forums.
On the other hand, Apple’s Bob Borchers defended the decision, stating
“Comparing our memory to other system’s memory actually isn’t equivalent, because of the fact that we have such an efficient use of memory, and we use memory compression, and we have a unified memory architecture. Actually, 8GB on an M3 MacBook Pro is probably analogous to 16GB on other systems (PCs). We just happen to be able to use it much more efficiently.“
He continued,
“And so what I would say is I would have people come in and try what they want to do on their systems, and they will I think see incredible performance. If you look at the raw data and capabilities of these systems, it really is phenomenal. And this is the place where I think people need to see beyond the specs, and actually go and look beyond the capabilities, and listen to trusted people like you who have actually used the systems.
People need to look beyond the specifications and actually go and understand how that technology is being used. That’s the true test.”
These comments were made by Borchers in a recent interview with Chinese ML engineer Lin YilYi. Just so you know, the debate isn’t only on having an 8GB RAM in the base model. Apple also limited the amount of memory on the base models to 256GB, which is quite shocking for the ‘pros.’ This decision will further impact the all-time low Mac sales.
While the memory debate continues, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro does provide upgrades like the mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display with ProMotion, an improved 1080p camera, and the new M3 chip. Additional benefits include better battery life, a 6-speaker sound system, more ports like HDMI and SD card, and support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
